Dear Dr. Rob: Last week you wrote about identifying your gift. I have a few talents, but I don’t know what my gift is. Please give me some guidance on how to discover my gift.
Dear Reader: One of my core beliefs is that everyone is gifted in some special way. Yet, like you, many of my clients and friends find it difficult to recognize and articulate their unique gift.
Here is a process I recommend to my clients.
Usually I recommend looking out before looking in. Because we often don’t know ourselves as well as others do, ask a few significant others who know you well to describe your gift. Start with those that know you best, like family and old friends.
- Once you have received this feedback, begin a process of self-reflection by considering some of the following questions:
- Going back to childhood, what have I always been good at?
- What do I do that comes easily for me but it is difficult for others?
- I feel energy and joy when I spend my time doing _____ .
- Even if I didn’t get paid for it, I would love to get up every day and _____ .
- If I could overcome the obstacles in my way, I love to spend my time _____ .
In my experience, reflecting on these questions brings clarity.
Dear readers, I would love to hear your thoughts on how to discover your gift. Also, if you have a question for me to address in a future Dr. Rob, please send it to me at rob@leadersconnect.com
