As a father and as a psychologist who’s worked with fathers for over 40 years, here’s some advice for fathers:
Give up the macho stuff
Realize you’re best nurturing your kids, not competing with them
Spend one-on-one time with each of your children
Tell them your stories, not just the heroic ones, but the ones where you
were vulnerable
Don’t always try to win
Don’t always try to be right
Tell them you love them
Enjoy them
Learn from their moms
Ask your dad to tell you the stories of his life
No temper outbursts, please
Teach respect for women by demonstrating respect for women
I have written three books about men. Men in Therapy, Awakening from the Deep Sleep, and What Every Man Needs to Know, which I plan to update. Please send me any comments you may have to add to my list of suggestions for fathers.
