Six weeks into the new academic year, and here comes the stress. Sunlight fading, holidays almost upon us, end of the year financial pressures: it’s a full court press state of stress. Here are Dr. Rob’s favorite tips for managing the stress of fall.
First of all, recognize that stress itself won’t kill you – it’s how you think about stress that’s the problem.
2. Recognize that applied appropriately, stress can be positive as a motivator to take care of business, as well as to take care of yourself.
3. Stress is a good signal that it’s time to focus on self-reflection. Whether meditation, prayer, reflective writing, or deep conversation, self-reflection can help to ease the stress.
4. Even though daylight is fading, getting outside for a walk, a run, or working in the garden in the sunshine can be extremely beneficial.
5. Wouldn’t this be a great time to use that gym membership or to sign up for an exercise class?
6. Never underestimate the positive power of a nap.
7. Keep a To-Did list rather than a To-Do list. Reinforce yourself and those around you for all you are getting done, rather than focusing on what you have not gotten done.
8. Talk through your stress and your worries with someone who is understanding. Keeping stress to yourself can be toxic.
9. Don’t forget to talk with your pets.
10. Being kind not only reduces the stress of others, but it is restorative for ourselves. Reflect on the Alice Childress quote, “Life is just a short walk from the cradle to the grave, and it sure behooves us to be kind to one another along the way.”
Enjoy your day, do the best you can, and keep in touch.
