Last week, the Michigan University Musical Society, lead by Ken Fischer, was honored with the National Medal of Arts from President Obama at the White House. For my friend, Ken, this was the fulfillment of a dream come true.
In my classes at the Business School and the College of Engineering at the University of Michigan, I teach my students that we all have an opportunity to make our dreams come true. As an exercise, I ask the students to share their dreams with their fellow students. Right away amazing things happen. For example, one student’s dream was to get a marketing job with an NFL team. A classmate mentioned that she knew the owner of an NFL team and would make the introduction.
Dr. Wayne Baker has tried similar experiments in his research on reciprocity. He finds that we all have resources to help one another achieve our goals.
Based on the incredible ability of people to help one another through their connections, today I am creating an exercise online through this Dr. Rob blog. If you would like to participate, here’s your assignment:
- This week, share with me one of your dreams. Post a dream goal by responding to this blog or by emailing me directly (rpasick@gmail.com).
- Next week I will post the dream goals and ask other people to see if they can help their fellow Dr. Rob readers toward achieving their goals.
So you have your assignment. Now it’s your turn to think about something you’ve dreamed of and to post it. Let’s see if we can create a community where community leaders help one another become like Ken Fischer and have a dream come true.
Dr. Rob
