What I’ve Learned Lately
-
Say yes when life gives you opportunities. You never know where they might lead. (Paul McCartney on the founding of the Beatles)
-
Our children are hurting. As Covid continues, we see it has taken a tremendous psychological toll on children of all ages. As a parent or grandparent, be patient and understand how all these changes have impacted our children.
-
It’s we men who need to work on our own tendencies to be violent. Not only so that women are safer, but to help ourselves be saner, as well.
-
We need more people like Selma Blair and John King, who are willing to tell us about their illnesses (MS) and not hide behind their celebrity.
-
We need to be more open about talking to people about our own health challenges.
-
It takes four weeks of abstinence to overcome any addiction.
-
We can become addicted to many things, not just substances. For example, the internet, cell phones, sex, food, sweets, etc.
-
It’s a mistake to downplay the power of emotions which often overwhelm our capacity to think rationally.
-
It’s important to be accepting of gentle reminders from friends about how to live, work, and play. That’s just one of the reasons friendship is so important.
-
Be very cautious about the things you laugh about in other people, because someday the very same things may happen to you.
-
From Gabriel Garcia Marquez, “it’s not how one lived, but how one remembers it.”
-
Life is short. We have only 4000 weeks to get it done, enjoy it, and get it as right as we can.
-
When knocked down in life, get up.
-
The 12 steps are good for everyone.
-
To be able to read the room, you have to pay total attention to what’s going on.
-
You can start over at any point in life.
-
Oftentimes, you can lose by going for one more win.
-
Too many people think only about themselves and no one else. It’s best to stay away from those folks.
-
Many people now are questioning the value of their work. It’s not a bad idea for all of us to do so.
