One of my most well received books is Self-Aware: A Guide for Success in Work and Life. Over the next several weeks, I will be presenting in my newsletter some key lessons from the book. If you have read the book, I would appreciate it if you could post a review on Amazon.
Here are some key principles about self-awareness
- Self-awareness is step number one and the cornerstone of emotional intelligence. Without adequate self-awareness, we struggle to understand others, to manage ourselves, and to develop healthy relationships.
- Self-awareness is a process. Because the world around us is continuously changing, and because we are forever in the process of changing ourselves, we can choose to continue to grow emotionally.
- Self-awareness is never wholly about the self. We learn about ourselves in relation to others.
- No one succeeds alone. All major accomplishments occur within a system of cooperation and competition.
- To learn who we are, we must act upon the world through continuous experimentation. We know by action, making mistakes, and by learning from these mistakes. We cannot become self-aware solely through self-reflection. We must act upon our world to learn from it. A successful life begins and ends with ongoing self-awareness.
To enhance my own self-awareness, every day I try to answer the following questions. From the Journal for Self-Aware:
- What am I grateful for?
- What are three life lessons I learned today?
- What did I do to take good care of myself and others?
