I first met Ari over 35 years ago when Zingerman’s opened. He was behind the counter, slicing corned beef, and I was thrilled that we finally had a Jewish deli in town. We’ve been friends ever since.
Ari is the best kind of friend—responding to emails daily, always available at one of the Zingerman’s locations, working away on his computer writing a newsletter or working on the next book. Whenever I need a speaker for LeadersConnect, a resource, or help for a friend, he’s always there.
I’m not sure exactly when he started writing. I just remember it began with journaling. Then came the newsletter, followed by a series of books on the principles behind Zingerman’s success—tomes thick enough to fill an entire bookshelf, which they proudly do in my study.
Thankfully, his more recent writings are more compact—first pamphlets, and now a brilliant chapbook filled with wisdom about the core principles he lives by and practices every day.
Just last week, he spoke—yet again—at LeadersConnect. Every time, we have a full house. And every time, we learn something new from our resident philosopher/restaurateur/entrepreneur: Ari. A man known simply by his first name—like Dion, Elvis, and Beyoncé
At this LeadersConnect session, Ari shared impactful reflections from his latest release, Life Lessons I Learned from Being a Line Cook. Drawing from his journey as a dishwasher-turned-entrepreneur, he spoke on themes of deep understanding, leadership, and the often-unexpected paths to personal growth.
Core Lessons and Ideas
Deep Understanding Is a Practice, Not a Destination
Weinzweig emphasized the value of “deep understanding”—the ability to reflect, connect unrelated ideas, and adapt creatively. This practice fosters personal growth, effective leadership, and meaningful societal contributions.
Passion Doesn’t Always Start With Passion
Contrary to the popular advice to “follow your passion,” Ari noted that only 1 in 10 people know their passion early. Instead, passion often emerges through attention, curiosity, and experience—like learning to find joy in the small details of cooking.
Any Job Can Be Transformative
Weinzweig’s journey from dishwasher to successful business owner illustrated that even humble roles can lead to transformation, purpose, and insight—if approached with humility and intention.
Stories Shape Our Reality.
Drawing from Gareth Higgins, Ari spoke about how the stories we tell ourselves influence our happiness and life direction. Being mindful of our internal narratives can shift our sense of possibility and agency.
Paradox Is Part of Leadership
Leadership, he explained, is full of contradictions: making compromises to create progress, being open to vulnerability, and learning to balance consensus with decision-making.
The Power of Listening and Presence
Inspired by Brenda Uland’s work, he underlined the creative and healing power of truly listening—an often-overlooked leadership and life skill that fosters trust and transformation.
