Can I see anothers woe,
And not be in sorrow too.
Can I see anothers grief,
And not seek for kind relief.
– William Blake
Fortunately, most of us who will be receiving this email have known relatively good fortune, but others have not. Estimates are that one in four children in our state live in poverty.
This Friday, October 25, Lloyd Carr will be presenting at our CEO Connect Breakfast event on “Leadership and Decision Making” as a benefit for The United Way. Throughout his life, Coach Carr has been dedicated to taking care of those in our community who are in need. He has been active as a Co-Chair and Board Member of the Washtenaw County United Way for many years. (Please email me if you would like an invitation to the event)
As Coach Carr teaches, giving back is not only healthy for our community, but it is essential for personal health and group well-being. It is one of the cornerstones of spiritual health, and also contributes to positive mental health and a vibrent work and team culture.
Here are a few of my personal thoughts about giving back:
- We can give back in many ways: our time, our money, our energy, or even a our smile. Contributions don’t always have to be monetary.
- Nonprofit organizations in our community can only survive through the contributions of others’ time and money. If our community is to be strong, each one of us individually must accept responsibility for the well-being of others.
- There are so many competing organizations who are competing for our time and money, it is often difficult to figure out which one to contribute to. This is why United Way is so important. Many Nonprofits in our community rely on The United Way for their survival.
- As a psychologist, I have learned that volunteerism, contributing to the well being of others, and generosity make a huge difference in developing and maintaining a happy state of being.
We’d love to have you join us Friday at 7:00am to hear Coach Carr talk and to provide support for The United Way. A contribution of any amount will be welcomed. For more information on the event, please email us.
