About 10 years ago I had the pleasure of working as a coach with Astrophysicist, Dr. Thomas Zurbuchen, who at the time was a faculty member at the University in Michigan School of Engineering and the founder and director of the highly successful Center For Entrepreneurship at the University. Like many of us at various points in our life, Thomas was trying to make an important decision about the next steps in his career. While he could choose among several intriguing possibilities, he determined that his true passion and the best use of his vast skill set pointed in the direction of NASA. His dream had always been to explore space. NASA provided the best opportunity. He enthusiastically accepted the role Of Director of Research at NASA.
Fast forward nine years: Dr. Zurbuchen is now one of the leaders of the Perseverance mission to Mars. The mission has already been successful at landing a helicopter on Mars.
His move to NASA was a risky one. For one thing, he had to give up tenure at the University. Yet this job change was not nearly as risky and uncertain as the Mars expedition.
From today’s article in the New York Times NASA’s Mars Helicopter Completes First Flight on Another Planet:
“A small robotic helicopter named Ingenuity made space exploration history on Monday when it lifted off the surface of Mars and hovered in the air. This was the first machine from Earth to fly like an airplane or a helicopter on another world.”
