It’s the first day of the first full week of the year, and I woke up thinking about Isaac Newton and his first law of thermodynamics: objects at rest tend to stay at rest, and objects in motion tend to stay in motion, unless they are acted upon by an external force.
“Yikes,” I think, “I think I know what that force is: work!”
When it comes to work, no one had it more accurate than Maynard G Krebs. If you are not familiar with Maynard Krebs, check out this video clip for his opinion of work.
So here are a few tips about what you can do to overcome your overwhelming urge to remain “an object at rest”:
- Go in to work for 30 minutes and then quickly leave and go to your favorite coffee shop, which hopefully is a lot like mine with friendly baristas and great coffee at Zingerman’s Coffee Company.

- Set the timer on your brand-new Apple watch for 10 minutes and start doing something difficult without stopping until the timer goes off. If you don’t yet have your Apple watch, close your eyes and nap.
- If your boss catches you napping, claim you are practicing meditation from the meditation books that you were given for Christmas.
- If that fails, claim that you were so stirred up by last night’s first episode of Downton Abbey, that you couldn’t fall asleep until 4 AM
Happy New Year to you all!
